Consultative Status with United Nations & Council of Europe

About AIDLR

A non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting and defending freedom of conscience, worship, and religion worldwide.

Our Mission

Championing Religious Freedom for Every Person

The International Association for the Defence of Religious Liberty (AIDLR) was established in 1946 by Dr. Jean Nussbaum, a Swiss physician and humanitarian. With Eleanor Roosevelt as its first Honorary President, the organization was born from the conviction that freedom of conscience is a fundamental human right.

Today, AIDLR operates in over 20 national sections across Europe, Africa, and Asia, with its international headquarters in Bern, Switzerland. We hold consultative status with the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and the OSCE.

"To disseminate ideas of tolerance, and defend the right of everyone to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion."

Dr Albert Schwitzer, 2nd President of the AIDLR, from 1962 to 1965.
