AIDLR
Association International pour la Défense de la Liberté Religieuse, International Association for the Defense of Religious Liberty in English,

is a Non-Governmental Organization dedicated to promoting and defending freedom of conscience, worship, and religion around the world.

Founded in 1946 by Dr. Jean NUSSBAUM assisted by Mrs. Eleanor ROOSEVELT, the first President of the Honorary Committee of the AIDLR.

Who we are

The International Association for the Defense of Religious Liberty (AIDLR) is a globally recognized non-governmental organization committed to promoting and defending religious freedom, freedom of conscience, and human rights for all. Founded in 1946 by Jean Nussbaum, a Swiss-born physician and humanitarian, AIDLR was established in the aftermath of World War II to provide a legal and moral framework for protecting individuals’ right to practice their beliefs without fear of persecution.

With consultative status at the United Nations and the European Council, AIDLR works closely with international organizations, governments, and civil society to advocate for policies and actions that safeguard religious liberty across the world. Our organization operates under the belief that religious freedom is a fundamental human right, integral to peace, tolerance, and global cooperation.

Our Mission

Our mission is to:

  • Promote religious freedom and the right to conscience for all people, regardless of their faith or non-faith.
  • Combat religious intolerance and discrimination in all its forms, advocating for those who face persecution due to their beliefs.
  • Raise global awareness about the importance of protecting this basic right through education, publications, and international dialogue.

A Global Movement

Since its founding, AIDLR has expanded its reach to over 20 national sections across Europe, Africa, and Asia, with its international headquarters in Bern, Switzerland. We engage with a wide range of religious, academic, and political leaders to foster a world where freedom of belief is respected and upheld.

Our Legacy

Jean Nussbaum’s vision for a more tolerant world is carried forward today through our initiatives, which include:

  • Publications: Our magazine, Conscience et Liberté, continues to be a leading voice in the conversation on religious freedom, with contributions from scholars, diplomats, and human rights activists from around the world.
  • Advocacy and Action: We participate in and organize international forums, symposiums, and educational programs that address contemporary challenges to religious freedom and human rights.

Jean Nussbaum passed away in 1967, leaving behind a legacy of tireless advocacy for religious freedom. His vision for a world where individuals can practice their faith without fear continues through AIDLR’s ongoing work.
