AIDLR
Association International pour la Défense de la Liberté Religieuse, International Association for the Defense of Religious Liberty in English,

is a Non-Governmental Organization dedicated to promoting and defending freedom of conscience, worship, and religion around the world.

Founded in 1946 by Dr. Jean NUSSBAUM assisted by Mrs. Eleanor ROOSEVELT, the first President of the Honorary Committee of the AIDLR.

Publications

The International Association for the Defense of Religious Liberty (AIDLR) has long been committed to promoting and defending religious freedom worldwide, and one of its most influential tools is its flagship publication, Conscience et Liberté (Conscience and Liberty). Since its founding in 1948, this magazine has become a cornerstone in global discussions on religious liberty, freedom of conscience, and human rights.

A Scholarly Platform for Religious Freedom

The magazine is known for its academic, non-denominational, and pluralistic approach. It publishes articles and studies by a wide array of contributors, including scholars, legal experts, diplomats, and religious leaders from various backgrounds. Its topics range from the foundations of religious freedom to contemporary challenges facing religious communities across the globe. As of 2006, the magazine had published over 984 articles, written by 536 authors from 70 different nationalities.

Multi-Language Outreach

Conscience et Liberté is available in several languages, including French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian. It ensures that its message of religious tolerance and human rights reaches a broad and diverse audience. Newer editions have also been published in Bulgarian and Czech.

Contribution to International Human Rights

The magazine has played a crucial role in advocating for key international agreements, such as the 1981 UN Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief. Through its articles and editorials, Conscience et Liberté has contributed to shaping global policy and raising awareness about the importance of safeguarding religious freedom.

A Legacy of Thought Leadership

Under the leadership of figures like its founder Jean Nussbaum, who also established the AIDLR, and the magazine’s early contributors, Conscience et Liberté has maintained a consistent focus on promoting a world where individuals can freely practice their beliefs or choose not to follow any religion without fear of discrimination.
